I must admit, I am sucker for photo apps. I absolutely love them. Give me an app like addLib U that can turn plain pictures into interesting pieces of graphic artwork, and I will be one happy camper.
Maybe it is because I am a new parent, and still have not gotten over the excitement of taking picture of my daughter—especially now that she knows how to pose. Whatever the reason, photo apps are my favorite iOS addiction and I'm always looking for the next great app. Most recently, I've been amazed by the truly unique and out-of-the-box photo app addLib U.
The app, which is the second production from WOW.inc, generates a themed photo album using your iPhone pictures. addLib U uses a mid-century modern theme to give your photos an authentic style of 1960s-1970s art. With a bit of magical flair, the app quickly turns up to four images into a customizable album.
addLib U is very easy to use. It has two ways to create an album: manually and automatically. In practice, neither option offers the user much control over layout. The main difference between manual and automatic is whether you want to choose the photos or let addLib U select pics at random from your photo library. If you do choose to select your own photos, you can also trim them to size using the built-in editor.
With photos selected, addLib U goes to work. The app automagically generates a set of images that combine your photos with dynamic graphics and a mid-century modern theme. The artistic images apply a variety of simple photo effects and color filters to your photos. Each image also adds a graphic caption using fonts appropriate for the theme.
Once the album is created, you can adjust the text and format or remove the date from each image individually. However, photo effects, font choices and page layouts can not be changed.
At first glance you might think that the automatic mode on addLib U would be a poor way to create a photo album. However, its simplicity also makes it a fun way to be surprised by your pictures. The charm of the automatic photo album is that you do not know which pictures will be combined in the album. Depending on the size of your photo library, it's a great way to be reminded of old pictures you may not have seen in a while.
Although exporting the finished images to your photo library is an option, the best part about addLib U is that the app lets you post your albums to Twitter, Facebook, Flickr and Instagram as individual photos. After all, isn’t that the whole reason why we make these photos in the first place, to share them with our friends?
AddLib U is an excellent app for jazzing up pictures or even making a quick ecard with a retro theme. As a parent, I absolutely love addLib U. I would recommend it to anyone looking to add an artistic twist to their photos in the simplest way possible.
