Touch the dark screen to authenticate… your mission profile displays. Apply your finger to the sensor… the screen slides upward revealing a well-worn device with an animal skin back featuring glowing ruby control buttons and semi-transparent screens. The CSIpad Tour, available for checkout beginning November 19th, blends a contemporary Crime Scene Investigator theme with old western style to explore specially selected works at the Sid Richardson Museum. The Museum features one of the nation's most significant private collections of Remington and Russell paintings of the Old West amassed by legendary Texas oilman and philanthropist Sid W. Richardson.
The CSIpad contains several interactions which allow the user to explore artwork details, engendering a sense of discovery and play. Each interaction can be thought of as a metaphor for examination, engaging the user in a game that encourages new understandings through active participation. Interactions include:
- Forensic Content Analyzer (about painting content)
- Artistic E-Microscope (about painting technique)
- Sound Analyzer Unit (imagined narrative)
The CSIpad app embraces the ideas and possibilities of the new mobile media, engaging museum visitors by actively focusing their attentions on the artwork. It enhances the gallery visit rather than simply creating a digital substitute.
Jan Wilkie, Sid Richardson Museum director, said “The CSIpad tour is a unique opportunity to reach out to new audiences through technology, making our collection relevant to them. This tour leverages technology to encourage a deeper understanding of the artwork.”
