TBH, which stands for 'To Be Honest,' started off as a meme on social networking sites and has since evolved into an independent mobile app. Apple recently featured it as "New & Noteworthy" and subsequently its growth has spread fast across the globe.
The app works in a very simple way. Friends visit each others profile page and click the big 'Like for TBH' button. In doing so, the recipient receives +1 Like (the app's scoring mechanism) and the ability to send a TBH message back to the person who gave the Like. The typical TBH message consists of 160 characters and contains complimentary words about a friendship, appearance or personality trait.
Chris Prescott, Founder of TBH says "I think it's important that we recognise the inherent goodness in young people today. We set out to build a platform that would celebrate positive communication, honesty and openness and we designed specific mechanics to combat negativity. TBH prevents fake accounts by verifying all users prior to joining and gives everyone strict control over who they can receive messages from. Teens of course want to have fun and that's part of the TBH experience, but we work very hard to ensure we get the balance right and maintain a friendly community spirit for everyone. I recommend everyone check out the app and see for themselves that an online teen community can in fact be a wonderfully positive place."
This phenomenon offers hope that a new wave of digital natives will discover praising someone and publicly celebrating friendships is a lot more rewarding than any act of cyber bullying.
