Nearly 30 years ago, she was the bright-eyed, child star of Punky Brewster on NBC. Now, Soleil Moon Frye is a successful author, entrepreneur and screenwriter - and occasional guest on shows like the Today Show, where she talks about the things that fascinate her kid's today. This morning, it was AlphaTots, an early education app that's apparently getting a lot of playtime from her youngest, Jagger.
"My four-year old is obsessed with this app," says Frye. "It's super fun. It really helps with their words." Even though today's kids don't know their Brewster from their Bieber, a small mention like that can spark major interest among the moms who grew up watching Soleil. And that, in turn, can mean a lot to the companies she mentions, like Spinlight, who - as the developers of AlphaTots - got an unexpected boost from the pop mom's Today Show mention.
"It's hard to beat a celebrity endorsement," says Matt Hutton, creative director and partner at Spinlight. Especially when that celebrity has more than a million followers. "AlphaTots has been out for a year, but this morning it was number two in education, passing a lot of major names along the way." In fact, by 11 a.m. this morning, it had passed both Tiger Woods PGA Tour and Madden NFL.
"It's funny to think someone you used to watch on TV is now watching you," says Hutton. "We never saw that coming. But nevertheless, we're very grateful for the plug."
