Radius Development is pleased to announce the availability of Best Ideal Gas Law Calculator 1.2 on the iPhone App Store. This convenient app enables solving the Ideal Gas Law, PV=nRT, for any of the four independent variables - Pressure, Volume, Temperature, and Number of Moles of gas.
The process is to select one of the four variables to be the dependent (or 'unlocked') variable, then adjust the values of the other variables to solve for the dependent one. The units of any of the variables can also be changed.
As changes are made to the units or sliders, the dependent variable value updates continuously providing instant feedback and showing the overall effects of the changes. The effect of perturbations can be seen easily which gives an intuitive feeling for how the equation works.
The ideal gas law takes the form of PV = nRT, where P is pressure, T is temperature, n is the number of moles of gas, T is temperature, and R is a constant whose values and units depend on the units chosen for P, V, and T. Simpler forms of the ideal gas law, such as Boyles Law, assume some of the variables are held constant.
Applications of the ideal gas law are prevalent in scientific experiments, activities such as SCUBA diving, air travel, ballooning, and many others. The law is called 'ideal' because it assumes the molecules of the gas behave like infinitely small particles - it is an approximation that is applicable in many cases for many types of gasses.
