Bella Boo won't be winning any beauty contests. But she will keep you entertained with a pretty fun and addicting game.
As Bella Boo the zombie fairy, you must battle a series of floating creatures, demons, and other evil forces who have invaded your cozy homeland of Dark Wood. You do this by encircling them with your killer trail, which zaps them out of the sky.
The longer you play the more intense the enemies get. The giant eyeballs get larger and eventually the screen just fills up with enemies that are shooting at and trying to grab your faithful zombie fairy.
There are three ways to control Bella Boo—a virtual joystick, tilting your iPhone/iPod touch, or tapping on the screen. The options menu recommends the virtual joystick, which is a wise choice. It is the easiest way to control Bella Boo. While generally I have found many games where the virtual joystick is pure junk, it actually works quite well here. It probably helps that your movements don't need to be exact - you are flying around in circles instead of trying to navigate precise terrain. Even with this option picked, shaking the iPhone is necessary to escape from some of the evil creatures that will grab you.
Controlling Bella Boo through tilting was a bit more difficult—even after calibrating the device for the preferred angle. Tapping on the screen to direct Bella Boo worked decently enough—but your finger is likely to keep getting in the way of the action. For the best bet go with the virtual joystick.
Probably the only hangup was resuming the game after a pause. Instead of being able to resume the game right away you have to navigate through the main screen and then tap on the saved point. It only means an extra tap, but it is a little out of sync with how most games resume from a pause.
If sharing your score and bragging to friends is appealing, then be sure to try out the social features built in to Bella Boo. When first firing up Bella Boo there is an option to register an account with OpenFeint—a popular network that is used by many iPhone games for posting leaderboards.
If you are looking for a great game that will kill some time, then Bella Boo is an excellent choice. The action is continuous and offers a great ongoing challenge.
