cameran for iphoneiPhoneographers rejoice ... award-winning photographer extraordinaire Mika Ninagawa has brought her colorful style to the App Store with Cameran. Born in 1972, Ninagawa's photography is known for intense colors with lots of saturation. This style is very apparent in the app's filters and I think you're going to love it.

One of Japan's best-known photographers, Ninagawa won the 26th Kimura Ihei Prize and has had her photo collection published by Rizzoli NY, which drew critical acclaim. And while all of her years of experience in the field probably won't translate into awards and worldwide exhibitions for you, you can rest assured that Cameran offers lots of options to get you started, including multiple filters and manual brightness, saturation, contrast and RGB manipulation.

Cameran is as hands-on as you want it to be in that all of these manual tools can offer up a litany of filter and picture alteration possibilities. As for the filters, there are 23 adjustable filters such as the standards Sepia, Monochrome, Toy, Lomo, etc. as well as the more stylistic filters that Ninagawa is known for such as Light1 that gives you a surreal bokeh effect. And since the iPhone's camera will most likely never be able to produce a natural bokeh, this is a great feature.

What I like about Cameran over other filter apps is that it offers you a lot more wiggle room in the alteration department. For instance, you can manually manipulate your colors. I like more contrast in my images so this works great for my needs. Also, if you want to bump up the reds, you can with the built-in RGB slider. In addition, the photo app offers several borders to choose from to enhance the overall look and feel of your masterpiece. And what would it be without blur, which can actually be used as tilt-shift action if you have a picture of a street, city or crowd. This is the function that allows you to alter the subject in the image to look small, almost miniature.

As for sharing your photos, Cameran is perfect for doing all the legwork of your photos and then exporting to Instagram, Facebook, Twitter or via email. It's super intuitive and makes for a lot of photo filter fun.

Cameran is the perfect photo filter app for those looking for a more hands-on approach to altering their images from their iDevice. Of course, it's a lot of fun for the novice too as the built-in filters really don't need any help and make for stellar, Ninagawa-esque photos that your friends will be jealous over.
