With three cars and a motorcycle in our household, I’m constantly trying to stay on top of scheduled maintenance. When was the last time I changed the oil in my wife and daughter’s cars? I know I wrote the mileage and date down on a piece of paper, but where did the paper go?

Meanwhile, my idea of a sport is finding the lowest price around for gas (nevermind I’ll drive miles out of my way to get it). Every few days, I’ll bust into the house and declare triumphantly, “I found gas at $2.39 today!” to my long-suffering wife.

That’s where Gas Cubby — which really doesn’t describe what this app is capable of — comes in. The concept is simple: It’s a database for all things cars and motorcycles.

Need to be reminded when to change the oil? Check. Need to record your mileage and gas for your business expenses for your tax returns? Check. Need to know your license plate number for the repair shop guy but you can never remember what it is? Check.

Gas Cubby, developed by App Cubby, will do all those things and more for $4.99, which is a pretty good price in my book.

Gas Cubby will track most things you can think of.  And it will do it for however many vehicles you own. If you need to track data that Gas Cubby doesn’t have a field for, you can customize Car Cubby to include it.

The app does a good job and it’s intuitive enough so even my teenage daughter could use it. She won’t, however. And that’s really the one drawback with Gas Cubby. It requires the kind of discipline the average Dick and Jane isn’t likely to have. For example, most people want to get their gas and go. I don’t think they’ll want to bother noting the price they paid, where and the brand in Gas Cubby unless they really, really, care about such things. That ain’t my kid, and she has an iPhone.

People like me, however, who use their automobiles and bikes for sport and business, will find Gas Cubby groovy. We need all the data we can get to support the business use of our automobiles come April 15. If you don’t have the personal discipline, you can count on the I.R.S. to make sure that you do.

What’s also great is that I can shoot the data in Excel (CVS) format to my email account, where I can then save, print and put it in the folder with all my other business expense receipts.

What I’d like to see is entries for mileage from point A to point B (starting with a field with my home town filled in) and tolls. Why not use the iPhone’s location or GPS ability to provide that info automatically?

For a new release Gas Cubby is off to a great start. Of course, from the developers of Trip Cubby, we’d expect nothing less.
