When I first came across GetGlue I thought, "Just what I need, another social network."
The last thing I wanted to do was open another social networking app from my iPhone and check in, "like" things and earn rewards. However, GetGlue can easily win one over with its addictive way to rate and review entertainment and lifestyle content.
GetGlue works much like Foursquare by "checking in" to topics. But instead of locations you choose among movies, TV shows, music, books, video games, celebrities and, oddly enough, wine. Checkins earn stickers, again similar to the badges found on Foursquare. However, one nice perk GetGlue offers is once you earn seven stickers there is an opportunity to receive physical stickers. And honestly, who doesn't like stickers?
Along with checkins you can "like" and rate favorite content. Check in to a particular item enough times and you can become the Guru. This makes you the resident expert and provides ability to lead discussions on that site's page.
GetGlue has the obligatory Twitter and Facebook integration, so if you wish you can overwhelm social networks with how much you love Dexter. Each check-in is set to broadcast by default, so if you don't enjoy oversharing your life it would be better not to link your profiles.
Checking in and rating are different tasks, but sometimes it feels a bit like duplicating the same action. Checking in works best if you just want to share something you are watching, while rating is the better way to share an opinion on a particular topic.
The wine topic seemed to be the least developed as several brands I tried were not listed. To remedy this, there is an option to email GetGlue every time you wish to suggest they expand the database.
Another pretty wide open area is "thinking about a topic" which includes everything from sleep to coffee. I found that this can be an interesting way to spark a discussion with other users based on their comments about that subject. For example, checking in to writing revealed many users commenting on their blogs or writing aspirations.
Like other social networking apps a stream of your friends appears so you can peruse and comment on their preferences. The best experience can be had with a larger friends list, as it lets you really get a feel the pule of what others are watching or commenting on.
In all GetGlue is an entertaining way to engage with other users over media consumption habits. And it is a fun way to expand that sticker collection.
