Because of all the hyped up news I don't think some developers were factoring in marketing costs in both time and money, and got caught short.Marc, thank you very much for talking about this. I hate to see good developers dropping out of the market and hopefully this will help.

Bringing the current state of affairs out into the open is healthy for the developer community because it gives realistic expectations. I too am happy to see people talking about this. The amount of misinformation makes it tough for folks to understand just what sort of market we're dealing with, and to make good decisions about how to approach it.

Thanks, Birdsoft. Im not sure if the interviewer had bought into the hype or was just playing the antagonist but I'm glad this is being talked about more and more and in more public forums and I also enjoyed your blogs on it. There is so much mis-information out there about how great this market is, and the lower prices just automatically mean more sales for everyone. There are already a ton of talented developers dropping back out of this market and it hasnt even been 1 year. Will there be enough Trism/iShoot stories to fill in the huge holes with new talent. Those have started to slow down too.And its good when its actually someone that is being successful on the AppStore is saying it so the whole that's just sour grapes argument doesnt really fit.

Very good well thought out Interview Marc. I MEANT to say:The math is simple, really. 25,000 apps in the store. 800,000,000 downloads. Average Lifetime Downloads per App = 32,000 downloads. And that’s the average – MANY will do worse. At 70 cents cents per unit (after Apple’s cut), this just isn’t a sustainable sales model.Marc Tassin

Which yields 32,000 downloads per app. Still, the point is taken that it's tough out there to even recover development costs at these price points.

Isn’t that supposed to be 800 million downloads, if you’re talking about since July?
