Now available in the App Store for $2.99, Kung Fu Panda 2 is hitting the digital storybook market a week before the film debuts on May 26. Not only does it follow the original storyline and feature images from the film, parents and their children can enjoy the epic skadooshiness of Jack Black's and Angelina Jolie's voices from their roles as Po and Tigress, respectively.
The story follows Po as he's living his dream as the Dragon Warrior protecting the Valley of Peace alongside his friends and fellow kung fu masters, the Furious Five – Tigress, Crane, Mantis, Viper and Monkey. However, life throws him a twist when a new villain plans to use an unstoppable weapon to conquer China and destroy kung fu.
Among the fun is a bonus feature called "Create-A-Scene" which is a digital sticker book that features characters from the film. It allows you to drag and drop characters and ninja props to construct a scene from your creativity. Better yet, take a snapshot, save to your photo library and then share with your friends.
The Kung Fu Panda 2 storybook, as well as the entire iStoryTime library, features an auto play option that like it says, narrates the story and automatically turns the pages. This is a great feature for those parents needing a quick minute to grab a few items for snack time or just take a quick me moment. I'm new to the parent game with an 11-month old daughter so those me moments are very, very precious.
The storybook also includes a read to me function that incorporates narration, but allows your child to turn the pages at their own pace. And for those kids on the brink of literary big boy/girl status, the read it myself feature is a great way to encourage learning how to read.
Also, the info menu which is represented by a big circle around an "I" in the top right allows you to turn on or off narration as well as browse for more books and tell a friend which brings up your email application.
The highlight text function is another useful option that helps children understand which words are being read. As the narrator reads, the words are turned to a different color so kids can follow along.
In conclusion, the fact that parents and their children can check out the original storyline, images and audio from the movie and create their own scenes and share with friends makes the Kung Fu Panda 2 movie storybook a great buy. The auto play and read to myself options make for a great learning and entertainment tool as well.
