What do you get when you combine the puzzling action of a match-3 game with the challenge of collecting letters and spelling words, unlocking achievements and earning badges? It’s all summed up in LETZ: The Story of Zed HD for iPad. A genuinely unique game built on classic gaming principles, LETZ: The Story of ZED features a smart combination of word building, match-3 puzzle style and a clever storyline that plays out neatly in one awesomely fun game.
LETZ: The Story of Zed HD starts out in a charming village full of happy letter characters until one day a mean, evil anti-alphabet guy shows up and locks them all away inside stones (not gems). All of them except Zed that is. Players help Zed free the letters by playing through 60 different story mode levels, unlocking a story mode word in each one that is used to tell the story from beginning to end. Along the way, players have the chance to earn badges and achievements and use special power-ups that are unlocked by spelling words with the left-over letters from the level. In addition to playing through story mode, there’s also an endless version for more casual play.
Though the basic elements of a match-3 (or more) game are ever-present, the addition of collecting letters for word building is a clever twist. While the objective to clear each level is to spell the designated story mode word, other letters collect in a tube down the side of the playing area and can be used to make additional words for bonus points and power-ups. Players can even choose to have the words built automatically from available or letters or challenge themselves to make the words. It’s not much of a challenge since words can only be three or four letters long, but it’s a fun twist and does give the much-needed power-ups.
LETZ: The Story of Zed HD offers even more depth than challenging gameplay by introducing power bonuses like bombs, treasure chests and the much-needed revealer character. In addition, players can collect coins to upgrade the power-ups, making them even more useful. Other elements include collecting badges for completing levels within the time limit, surpassing the minimum score requirement and other achievements unique to different levels. The game spans four different worlds and each one has its own theme. The game also has a built in dictionary, keeping track of words spelled and has achievements for spelling collections of words.
LETZ: The Story of Zed HD mimics a smart combination of Bejeweled and Bookworm, but adds its own unique flare. With so many different elements, LETZ: The Story of Zed is a rich action puzzle game that has the ability to please casual and serious puzzle arcade lovers alike. Available for iPad 2, The New iPad and iPad Mini, LETZ: The Story of Zed HD is a solid investment with longevity and replay value that can’t be beat.
