Live Effects is a photographic effects app from Omaxmedia that’s a twist on the old WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) idea. What it does is twirls, swirls and distorts in other ways, images as seen through the iPhone 3GS’s camera in real-time. Note, this app is intended only for the 3GS, which has the computing horsepower to properly run it, although slowly at times.
What you see and get in Omaxmedia’s Live Effects is one of seven possible effects:
You can get a good look at what each of these special effects filters do by watching the embedded video below. Personally, I found the Complex Kaleidoscope filter effect the most interesting, but you can judge for yourself.
The effects happen live as you use your camera, and if you want to save what you see, tap anywhere on the screen to trigger the iPhone camera’s electronic shutter. The full-screen images, which can take several seconds to save, are stored in your Photo Album
This app also includes the "Living Puzzle" mini-game, which is similar in concept to the classic slider puzzle where you move tiles around to complete a picture. In this instance, the picture is whatever you happening to be looking at through the iPhone’s camera. There’s a 4 X 6 grid of tiles; each tile is randomly placed and rotated. The trick is to move and turn tiles into their proper position to complete the picture.
Live Effects is only $0.99, and it’s probably worth that, but I found its usefulness a bit limited and the novelty wore off fast. It's not likely to live for very long on my 3GS alongside the many photo effects apps I own that feature similar effects, although not in real time.
