Loopt Version 1.1 launched today. We were hoping for the long anticipated “background GPS” mode — but that is still not available, as we thought, from the Apple firmware 2.1. Instead, Loopt aficionados will have to do with the new “Loopt mix” feature, which, like twinkle, shows a list of all “Loopers” in your immediate vicinity.
Although it initially appears that that there is no way to sort these people by gender, age or interest, this functionality is available by clicking on “refine search” at the very bottom of the list of people near you. A second look at the activity level near me (Santa Monica California) revealed a surprising amount of traffic — at least equivalent to Twinkle as of now.
Loopt clearly is a work in progress. The “mix” functionality gives me hope that this company may be on to something and not doomed as I (and others) originally thought. Further refinement of the concept may in fact deliver critical mass.

“strangers” – I prefer to think of them as “people I don’t know yet.”

Hey Fred, Thank you for taking the time to check out Loopt Mix today. I just wanted to correct a couple misunderstandings in your post. Loopt Mix does indeed allow users to search via shared interests, community affiliation and gender etc. Also, messages between users are sent via email and do NOT reveal the user’s full name, exact location, email address or phone number. The user is always in control and can easily turn off the feature, report abuse or block other users at any time. To Loopt.
Thanks for pointing out the “refine search” function. Being at the very bottom of a long scrollable area, I didn’t see it — and I would assume others wont either. I would strongly suggest surfacing that functionality in a more prominent way. I have updated the article accordingly.
I think I have been too hard on Loopt. Doing random searches by age and gender shows that there are far more people on the service than I thought. There is clearly the potential for this to turn into a Myspace like phenomenon — especially if facebook and myspace dont integrate GPS functionality soon.

Hey Fred,
Thanks for the great suggestion regarding the search filters. We will take a look at some improvements. Appreciate you taking a second look at the new Loopt Mix feature – and updating your post. Glad to hear there is a lot of Mix activity going on in Santa Monica!
