Thanks for pointing out the “refine search” function. Being at the very bottom of a long scrollable area, I didn’t see it — and I would assume others wont either. I would strongly suggest surfacing that functionality in a more prominent way. I have updated the article accordingly.

I think I have been too hard on Loopt. Doing random searches by age and gender shows that there are far more people on the service than I thought. There is clearly the potential for this to turn into a Myspace like phenomenon — especially if facebook and myspace dont integrate GPS functionality soon.
