If you’re looking for a way to combine technology and old-school skills to entertain youngsters, then take a page out of Felloway’s MixPrintPaint app for iPad. Straying from the typical create and color software, MixPrintPaint allows users to choose coloring page themes and backgrounds, build pages by inserting characters and objects, and then print the page for coloring with real-life crayons and markers.
It offers a best-of-both-worlds approach by allowing interactive drag-and-drop creativity along with hands-on coloring.
MixPrintPaint features several background options with either an “under the sea” or “princesses & knights” theme and supplies a variety of line art characters and objects to fit into both. There’s also a blank page for mixing the themes together. Creating pages is quick and easy, using only drag and drop technology with the option for onscreen manipulation, including rotation, shrinking and enlarging. Once a page is created, simply print to color. And the best part? There are two printing options for twice the fun.
With MixPrintPaint’s printing options, you can print the single coloring page just as it appears on screen, or you can print the background and the chosen characters on separate pieces of paper to cut out and play. The option to let kids mix and match their own coloring pages is fun, but the option to create play scenes and encourage the use of crayons and scissors serves as double-duty for building those fine motor skills. You could even laminate the pieces after coloring and cutting for extended use.
MixPrintPaint is a creative app that was clearly designed with younger children in mind. Kids have the opportunity to use iPad to create fun scenes, but then with creative time extended to include crayons, pencils, markers, scissors and even other real-world art supplies, the fun is doubled. The app is easy to use, appeals to either gender, and offers a “blank” page option for drawing in your own background after printing. Much more interesting than either a paper or electronic coloring book, MixPrintPaint covers both bases.
MixPrintPaint has six predesigned backgrounds, four blank pages with themed frames, and the single blank page option. Characters range from knights, kings, queens, and princesses to deep sea divers, mermaids and sea critters. The developer also hints at additional backgrounds and characters to be added later. All in all, MixPrintPaint is a solid value and provides a unique blend of creative opportunities for kids. Best of all, it shows kids how digital art can be transformed into real-world applications on a scale they can understand.
