The emergence of the App Store has undeniably created a renaissance of exciting and inventive new games. This much is not news to anyone. What gamers may not realize is that the iPhone has become the stage for older PC games to get a second life, and even the chance to come back into fashion. Such is the case for Monkey Island 2: Special Edition: Le Chuck's Revenge, the app by LucasArts.
Monkey Island 2: Special Edition is a classic "adventure game," which is a genre of gaming that younger players probably haven't even heard of. The basics of play are simple: the player must control a cartoon character, and navigate this character through a two-dimensional world, solve puzzles, and perform heroic deeds. Adventure games are typically cinematic, story intensive, and linear. Monkey Island 2: Special Edition: Le Chuck's Revenge is no exception.
The special edition story found in Monkey Island 2 is a funny, irreverent tale about pirates. Players might easily forget that it was originally a game that debuted on floppy discs in 1997, especially since franchises like Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean have done so much to bring pirates and pirate humor back into the limelight. The special edition story draws heavily on plot elements from the first Monkey Island game, but players who are unfamiliar will not get lost.
The object of the game is to guide the hero, Guybrush Threepwood, through a series of islands, so that he might defeat his nemesis, LeChuck, and find the ultimate treasture: Big Whoop. If it sounds silly, that's because it is. Monkey Island 2 is a game that wants to make you laugh, and it succeeds most of the time.
Players might also forget the age of the game when they get a look at the graphics. The animations are smooth and clean, and many of the backgrounds were originally hand painted. The audio in Monkey Island 2: Special Edition is top-notch as well, with some of the best, funniest voice acting you will find in a game, anywhere. The music is catchy and the interface is simple and well-designed. If this were not a game that was designed a decade ago, it would certainly cost a lot more.
The Monkey Island game series appeals to two types of gamers: the young crowd of gamers looking for an engaging, puzzle-filled adventure game, and the older crowd of gamers looking to recapture a little bit of classic gaming nostalgia. Monkey Island 2: Special Edition: Le Chuck's Revenge succeeds on all levels, and neither group will be disappointed.
