The new Movies app was written by Jeffrey Grossman, a college sophomore, and was sold to the online movie website Flixster for an undisclosed sum last week. It is one slick app.
What separates Movies from some of the other apps in this category is the attention to detail. Starting with the icons in the nav bar, which are of a higher caliber than seen in most apps, to the overall organization of information – i can’t find much to fault in this app. It does what it is supposed to do, and it does it well.
Like Yahoo Movies, you can easily mark certain theaters as favorites, and reference all your favorite theaters in one screen. From there, its one click to see what is playing at each theater, and another click to see the movie details. These include of course, showtimes, but also, the actual movie trailers, which are surprisingly watchable on the iPhone.
My only gripe with the app is that there is no search mode, so for example, I can’t easily find out where a movie such as Bottle Shock is playing. But that’s not a huge gripe, since one usually starts by browsing nearby theaters, as opposed to starting with a movie title.

I am the developer of the app, and would like to make a point about the last part of the review (movie search).
If you go to the DVD tab, at the top there is a “New Releases on DVD” (selected by default) and “Search”. If you tap Search, you can search for ANY movie in Flixster’s database of over 70,000 movies. If you tap on the movie you want, you get the familiar Movie Details page. If the movie is playing in theaters, you should see a link to “Tickets & Showtimes”. In addition, if you choose a movie from the main “Box Office” tab, you get a Showtimes page which lists the times that the movie is playing in your area.

Thanks, Jeff.
Wouldn’t have thought to go to the “DVD” tab to do a search. I verified that it does work, but i would suggest making the functionality more apparent to a first time user.
