Developer: Warner Bros. Entertainment
Price: $0.99 Download on the App Store
Last year Warner Brothers brought 5th Cell's award-winning Scribblenauts game to the iOS platform for iPhone in the form of Scribblenauts Remix. As evidenced by its original success on the Nintendo DS, Scribblenauts is an ideal game for a mobile platform. During the holidays, the price for Scribblenauts Remix dropped to .99 and fortunately for iPhone owners, the holiday sale has been extended through the new year and it's one of the best buys in the App Store right now.
As with the original game, players must help Maxwell create solutions to various problems by thinking up creative ways to solve each level. Scribblenauts Remix features 40 various levels found in both the original Scribblenauts and Super Scribblenauts games, plus has an additional 10 levels exclusive to the iOS platform. The remix won't feel all that new to those who have played the previous versions, but it's still hard to pass up at this price.
Those who aren’t familiar with the game can pick up Scribblenauts Remix and quickly learn to play through the included tutorial. The game is based around a single character, Maxwell, who is presented with a new puzzling situation with each level. His task may be simple, such as get a haircut or wake a sleeping astronaut, or his quest may be a bit more daunting such as putting out a fire or destroying the bogeyman. Whatever the challenge, players conjure items for Maxwell to use by simply typing the word into Maxwell’s notebook. There are an abundance of items that can be created – it really is limited only by imagination (and copyright infringement laws). Still, just because you can conjure a nuclear weapon or a robot penguin doesn’t necessarily mean it will help Maxwell solve the level – but then again it might.
Scribblenauts Remix is a game that is all about imagination and creative problem solving. You can certainly earn points for solving the level in the quickest, most efficient manner, but it only requires starites to progressively unlock new worlds and levels. Starites can be collected on each level that is solved. Sometimes solving one level will unlock the subsequent two or three levels, enabling skipping if there should be one that seems unsolvable. There's also a sandbox to play around in and test the limits of the game's dictionary — which is nothing short of incredible.
Whether you’re a long-time fan of the original or simply curious about the new Scribblenauts Remix, it is a worthwhile game to download and play. It’s entertaining enough to play for blocks of time and casual enough to pick up and play one level at a time. While the sale price lasts, Scribblenauts Remix is an absolute steal at .99. The app is available at the sale price for iPad and iPhone.
