Leveraging the world-wide reach of Radio.com, Spark Radio by Handcast Media Labs puts thousands of radio stations at your iPhone fingertip and streams them over Wi-Fi or 3G. Spark Radio has been available for several months and has undergone a bit of a price drop in that time. So if you avoided the initial release because of the six dollar price tag, but haven’t yet found a radio app that pleases you, then tune in.
On the surface, Spark Radio appears to be just another way to listen to the radio on iPhone. A closer look reveals a full-bodied application with a ton of preference settings, easy access to all genres of music, search functions, and a fully integrated web browser. Spark Radio populates some local stations, allows you to search the streaming URL of others, and supports an approximate total of 24,000 stations around the world.
Spark Radio features a plethora of setting options, a visual display that re-animates itself with a touch and the ability to browse music genres from punk rock to Christmas, easy listening to talk radio. You can even search stations for a favorite artist. The best part is that most of the stations actually play – even when your signal weakens. Granted, the magnitude of settings may seem overwhelming and even unnecessary at first, but once you start exploring Spark Radio, you get a sense of control that is pleasing.
The built in web browser allows you to keep listening while searching the web and though this will drain your battery in due time, it’s a nice feature to have. Users can also opt to slide the sleep delay bar to infinity, plug your phone into a stereo dock or car adapter and listen indefinitely. When traveling, simply allow Spark Radio to utilize GPS function and populate stations wherever you may roam.
For the sheer robust function and vast selection of options, Spark Radio is a good app. The price drop to $1.99 makes it a bargain. Well worth the investment, Spark Radio gives you a new, easy way to listen to the radio whenever – wherever.
