Talking Santa for iPhoneTalking Santa for iPhone will feel familiar to anyone who has used any of the other “Talking Friends” apps by the developer, Outfit7. When you open the app it’s just you and the cartoon character, face to face. Speak, and the character will repeat what you say—in a distorted voice, of course. Touch buttons to manipulate the character, or even hit record to make a customized greeting to send to your friends.

While it’s much like the others, Talking Santa for iPhone is probably the best one yet. Since it’s for a specific holiday, the ability to generate and share greeting cards suddenly makes a lot of sense. Santa is also surrounded by all the holiday accouterments you’d expect: a snowman, a big bag of gifts, a sleigh with a tray of cookies and a glass of milk.

But there’s lots you won’t expect. Why does Santa have such a deep, disquieting voice? How come we’ve been given the ability to slap Santa across the face, or run him down with an enormous snowball? And what is with that greeting card where Santa flashes his boxer shorts?

The answer to all of these is that Outfit7 has a sense of humor all their own. All this silliness is just more reason to like this app, and probably why Outfit7 has managed to rise above all the knockoffs out there. Talking Santa even features a cameo appearance by none other than Talking Tom Cat, probably the most successful, most easily-recognizable character in the series.

Unfortunately, the season-specific nature of Talking Santa also gives it less of a shelf-life than the others in the series. After December 25th, it’s unlikely this app will be anywhere near your home screen. This makes it a bit harder to justify the $1.99 purchase price. The other talking creatures in the series are just $0.99 apiece, and Talking Tom Cat himself is free.

However, in the big scheme of things, a couple of bucks is not a lot to ask. It’s certainly less than you’d spend on a gift card in any brick-and-mortar store. If you’re a fan of the others, if you need a moment’s diversion, or if you need a unique holiday greeting card, Talking Santa will not disappoint. This app is also recommended if you have kids, who will definitely think this crazy version of Santa is hilarious.
