TED – If you’re looking to be inspired and informed by a community of CEOs, scientists, designers, intellectuals and several other people with big ideas, download VenueM’s free TED. It’s an app that will plug your brain into audio discussions and videos from the esteemed annual TED conference.
TED (the conference) started in 1984 as a way to bring together thought leaders to talk about technology, entertainment and design. Since then, TED has branched into themes about business, science, culture, arts and global issues.
To speak at a TED conference is by invitation only. The speakers have been as varied as Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon; to Thomas Dolby, the musican; to Jane Goodall, famous for her work with primates.
It’s cliche, but true: There’s something for everyone, in an illuminating, yet approachable way. The talks are limited to 18 minutes, which probably has something to do with its popularity and prestige.
In addition to consuming content published by TED, you can use this app to search for content, bookmark your favorite discussions and share them (they published under a Creative Commons license).
On my wish list is more facile navigation. The content is not organized in an way that easy to browse. You can use search, but that only goes so far, because you have to know what you’re looking for. For example TED lists 293 videos, each with a title and a two lines of text, which are not always descriptive. It can be hit or miss to find something of particular interest. What I’d like to see is the content organized into categories, or perhaps alphabetically by speaker name or subject.
The content TED (the conference) provides is so wonderful and the app is free, I feel almost greedy to ask for more. Take TED along wherever you go and be more inspired and informed.
