The Jerky Boys Prank Caller is one of two recently released Jerky Boys apps for iPhone, with the other being The Jerky Boys Pinball. This app that lets you set up your friends to receive an inbound prank call on your phone. The Jerky Boys Prank Caller is a logical ancillary to the cult status Jerky Boys albums, also available on iTunes, and the app even throws in some unreleased material to quell its fan base.
For those who don’t know The Jerky Boys, it's a former comedic duo gone solo with routines that feature various characters making prank phone calls to unsuspecting recipients. Several albums have been released over the years as well as a 1995 movie based on the act. The movie didn’t receive rave reviews, but the albums were popular enough, with two going double platinum. The Jerky Boys Prank Caller app is the epitome of The Jerky Boys, featuring three characters – Frank Rizzo, Jack Tors, and Sol Rosenberg.
The Jerky Boys Prank Caller includes previously unreleased recorded phone calls in each of the three character’s voices, a sound board with numerous “Jerkyisms,” greetings, questions, responses, and insults from all three, and answering machine messages, and ringtones. And of course the creme-de-la-creme, three different prank calls you can institute on your own unsuspecting friends.
The prank calling feature is easy to set up, you simply select your favorite character, select the “jerky prank” icon, and tap “call.” Your iPhone will automatically go back to the blank screen allowing you to inconspicuously lay down your device and walk away. After about a minute, your phone appears to ring and if you can convince someone else to answer it, the prank begins. The recordings are set up to play out automatically, but with carefully timed pauses each recording is likely to get one over on at least a couple friends.
The Jerky Boys are comical and crass and their largest fan base is probably male, which is a good thing since the pre-recorded pranks use the male pronouns “he” and “him,” making them unlikely to convince anyone answering a female’s phone that the call is real. That said, the prank call feature isn’t the only feature of the app, though Rizzo's prank call makes it. The remaining sound bytes and real recordings will still amuse any fan of The Jerky Boys regardless of gender. Fans can also interact with the creators and developers by sending emails for suggestions from directly within the app.
If you love The Jerky Boys characters (or would like to meet them) and aren’t easily offended, The Jerky Boys Prank Caller is a decent, if not great, compilation of material and an effective prank machine. Rizzo is without a doubt the leader of the gang and the most developed character. The app is currently selling for $1.99, but listed as an introductory price. For many, I doubt its worth more than this, but with the potential for future updates based on user suggestions, new material might also help keep it fresh enough to warrant the purchase for quite some time to come – at least for fans.
