Everyone’s favorite round robot re-entered the App Store with a second installment to the hugely popular Toy Bot Diaries. The sequel, Toy Bot Diaries Entry 2, finds toy bot still on a mission to deliver a message to King Bot. Only this time he’s out of the sewers and into the sky.
This platform-style game has toy bot use his grappling hook, magnetic boots and ingenuity to raise up through each level — from the ground to the sky, from the sky to the spaceship and so on. But this simple explanation doesn’t do justice the game.
The graphics — clean, crisp and colorful — are perfectly suited to mobile gaming where screen real estate is limited and small details can easily become visual clutter. Even with simplified graphics, the folks from IUGI Mobile Entertainment didn’t skimp on personality. Toy Bot’s minimal features are expressive; fear, suprise and joy all register on his cherubic metallic face.
As a less experienced gamer — I missed out on Entry 1 — I’m enjoying Toy Bot Diaries Entry 2. There are many detours along the way. Although more than once I’ve gotten Toy Bot stuck, the predicaments are eventually escapable, even if it takes time to figure out the next move. More seasoned players might play through quicker, but there are enough challenges to keep gamers of all skill levels interested. The trick is to use Toy Bot’s tools creatively: use the magnetic boots and grappling hook in conjunction to raise metallic objects; grapple and swing to build up momentum; or attach to twirling fans to be catapulted.
Toy Bot Diaries Entry 2 is a ton of fun and well worth $3.99 for a few hours (or quite a few hours depending on skill level) of gameplay.
