Like that kid from Jerry Maguire, the precocious application WeirdFacts, by Jens Beuckenhauer, volunteers odd facts for the iPhone user's amusement. A Random Fact button at the bottom generates hundreds of weird facts on a notepad on the screen.
WeirdFacts offers up tidbits that are silly and strange, and often fascinating, like "Cats cannot taste sweet things" or "A full 7% of the entire Irish Barley crop goes to production of Guinness." (I'd be curious to know how much American income goes to purchase of Guinness.)
Some of the facts in WeirdFacts are useful, such as "Candles will last a lot longer if placed in the freezer for at least 3 hours prior to burning." Others are just strange, "On average, 100 people choke to death on ballpoint pens every year." The best one I encountered in WeirdFacts for both ick factor and interest? "Alfred Hitchcock didn't have a belly button. It was eliminated when he was sewn up after surgery." Weird, indeed.
While pondering missing buttons, I realized that a back button to review previous weird facts would be convenient. Luckily, the likelihood of flipping through and encountering the same fact twice isn't too rare. My WeirdFacts app started each time with "A cat has 32 muscles in each ear," again and again because it is the fact of the day, which apparently the WeirdFacts changes daily for you. Repetition of other facts occurs, but new ones are included frequently to keep the rotation fresh despite repeats.
WeirdFacts is a fun novelty, likely a kid-pleaser. Its easy to imagine little ones enjoying learning facts like "Moths don't have stomachs." And if it's true (which it is) that "Einstein couldn't speak fluently by age nine, and his parents thought he might be retarded," then there may be hope that this funny, frivolous app could, in fact, be a brilliant and fulfilling one!
