Another addition to the fake phone call apps, Wingman offers more than just an excuse to bail. Released by first-time iPhone app developer Mind, Matter, and Meaning, Wingman provides the option to receive a fake phone call at the touch of a button but it also provides help should you decide to stick it out on a date or at a meeting.
Under the “I’m Staying” option, the app offers positive support like current news headlines or questions to start a conversation, romantic date ideas, or pickup lines. In case the situation calls for a distraction, Wingman will provide you with a fake phone call.
Compared to fake phone call app Exitstrategy, Wingman offers less control over the fake call. For one thing, the user cannot choose a caller from their contacts. Here the caller will always be “Charles Kennedy.” Another downside is the fact that the ringtone sounds like a Nokia ringtone, which compromises believability.
Wingman’s user interface is set up well, making it easy to navigate through the different choices but this app needs improvements in regards to what it actually offers. In addition to the above mentioned issues with fake calls, the positive support is slightly generic and seems to be aimed solely at male users.
While it is refreshing to see an app of this kind that offers both support to get out of a situation as well as more positive help to stay in a situation and make the best of it, Wingman will need an update or two to be truly useful.
