Ouch! Did you just hit me with a ninja monkey? Chillingo, developers of Cut the Rope, has done it again with Swords and Soldiers, where they welcome you to ye olde times of castle defense dominance where your strategy should be mightier than your sword. And yes, there are monkeys with ninja abilities.
Luckily for you, this isn’t a boring builid-up-your-defense-and-throw-a-stone castle defense game. Quite the contrary, Swords and Soldiers has a hilarious storyline and even more fantastic characters that will put Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table to shame.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m a big fan of large throw-a-stone campaigns, but it doesn’t get any better than commanding an army of Vikings in their quest to create the ultimate BBQ, leading the Aztecs in defense of the Holy Pepper and building an array of explosive Chinese toys. But beware as Swords and Soldiers may have you stuck in ye olde times as it’s that addictive and entertaining.
“May Thor’s Thunder Light Your Barbeque!” When you launch the Swords and Soldiers app you’ll be prompted to select a profile, which is great for having multiple fans of the game in one household. The next screen offers you single player, options, credits and connection to Crystal. The app is also connected to Game Center. After you’ve set your profile and signed into your preferred gaming network, my recommendation is to jump straight into single player mode to get a feel for the game.
You have four options under this mode including campaign, which allows you to battle through Swords and Soldiers’ three epic levels as the Vikings, Aztecs and Chinese. Each campaign has several mini levels displayed on a map and each level contains its own battles for the fight of BBQ, Holy Pepper and explosive toys.
While the goals of Swords and Soldiers are fairly simple, how you command your army is where a good strategy comes into play. To build your army, you must first collect gold from the local mines and sometimes you’re given a bit of gold to survive on.
This gold allows you to buy beserkers, upgrade weapons, healing potions and other medieval times battling treats, which all become very handy when battling ye hearts out. What you choose to upgrade becomes the important strategy.
Swords and Soldiers, with its beautifully executed storyline, fun characters and lovely graphics makes this app a must download for the iPhone. To top it off, the ninja monkeys will have you rolling out load on the floor for hours.
