Geochaching and iPhone apps, two of my favorite things, have combined to bring a bit of fun and awareness to the state of New Mexico. The Catch the Kid app, created as a campaign by the famed creatives at M&C Saatchi for the New Mexico Tourism Department (NMTD), is a very large-scale scavenger hunt for outlaw Billy the Kid.
With a potential $10,000 bounty for the first "posse" to present "The Kid" with an arrest warrant, this has to be one of the best summer travel ideas ever. Sure, there have been widespread crowd sourcing scavenger hunts across the country, but this app allows you to explore a major part of history as well as truly explore all the great sights and sounds New Mexico has to offer.
Upon launching Catch the Kid, you are prompted to create an account or a "posse" profile. Of course, you don't need a smartphone to play, but it makes the scavenger hunt a lot more fun and interactive. If you don't, login to Catch the Kid. After you've downloaded the app and created a profile, you're ready to explore.
The point of the app is to explore the state and specifically the predetermined locations throughout the state that when checked into will unlock clues that lead to Billy's New Mexico hideout. The more clues you collect, the more information you will have about where, when and how to capture The Kid. Again, first one to The Kid with an arrest warrant will win the $10,000 award.
According to New Mexico Tourism Cabinet Secretary Monique Jacobson, Billy the Kid remains one of New Mexico's most iconic and infamous characters. I can't tell you how many stories and movies I've read and watched about The Kid so the Catch the Kid app is really exciting.
But wait, there's more. Along with the cash prize, players can unlock additional New Mexico travel deals and win prizes along the journey using the app specifically for the game. Their are loot locations that can be discovered and used to buy vacations, deals or even meals online.
M&C Saatchi CEO of North America Huw Griffith mentioned that they wanted to encourage people to travel around the beautiful state and that the app captures the adventurous spirit of New Mexico. I wish there was an app like this for every state as I can only imagine the amount of travel ideas I'm missing.
For its innovative geocaching abilities combined with its connection to one of history's most notorious outlaws, the Catch the Kid iPhone app is the perfect addition to anybody's New Mexico travel plans. And hey, you might just be the first posse to present the warrant and win $10,000.
